Today, Samsung introduces its latest generation portable SSD with blazing fast read/write performance, called the X5. It uses an NVMe-based SSD inside to achieve up to 2800 MB/s read and 2300 MB/s write speeds, which is much faster than normal SATA-based portable SSDs in the market.

All that performance will not mean anything to the users, if the X5 is using a USB 3.0 Gen 2 (USB 3.1) connection. Its bandwidth is limited to only 10 Gbps or 1250 MB/s. Therefore, the X5 has implemented the Thunderbolt 3 for the 40 Gbps (5000 MB/s) bandwidth. The X5 is designed for 4K video editing, 3D rendering or other tasks with very large files. A 20 GB-sized video file only takes 12 seconds to transfer to the X5, because of the 2300 MB/s maximum write speed.

The compact glossy metal body combined with the internal shock-resistant frame is claimed to be able to withstand drops of up to 2 meters.

The X5 portable SSD comes with three capacities, including 500 GB, 1 TB and 2TB. They are priced at $399.99 USD, $699.99 USD and $1399.99 USD (MSRP) respectively. The drive will have a 3-year warranty and is expected to available around the world on 3 September.
